The Cannes Film Festival Through the Lens of a UST Projector

Since 1946, the Cannes Film Festival has drawn the biggest names in the film and fashion industries to France's shores to bear witness to the greatest films of the year while donning the most exquisite fashion on the red carpet. The event was created as a response to the suspension of the Venice Film Festival during WW2, and seeing as Italy and France are two of the most iconic fashion capitals in the world, it’s not surprising that the Cannes Film Festival is one of the most colorful and extravagant events in the world whether we’re talking films or fashion. 

The festival will take place between May 16th and May 27th, and so far, 19 movies have been revealed as the official contenders for the coveted award. A few of the most highly anticipated titles are The Zone of Interest directed by Johnathan Glazer, and The Old Oak directed by Ken Loach who has already won the award twice. The panel of nine jury members composed of directors, producers, actors, and actresses from all around the world will judge the 19 nominees to find the 2023 winner of the Palme d’Or.

Shoplifters (Hirokazu Koreeda - 2018)

A film that’s based on the lives of an underprivileged Japanese family that has learned to survive in the world by shoplifting. The family adopts a girl one day after the dad found her outside on a cold day, but this one decision changes their lives and their relationship with the community in a way they hadn’t imagined.

Parasite (Bong Joon-ho - 2019)

A struggling family works together to scheme their way into a life of luxury after the son gets a job working for a wealthy family. They each forge a new identity in hopes to be hired by the Park family, and when their plan works, they find themselves living a very parasitic life.

This film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 and went on to win an Oscar for Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards. It’s available to stream on all major streaming platforms, including Netflix.

Titane (Julia Ducournau - 2021)

After a terrible car accident, a young girl has to have a plate of metal fitted into her head, essentially making her half-machine. The girl grows to become quite fond of machinery, particularly cars, and she ultimately develops a very intimate bond with a car which explains why this film is categorized as horror.

If this sounds like your type of sci-fi movie, then you can stream it on Hulu. The unreal scenes of this film will definitely come to life in 4K UHD if you plan to enjoy it on the Formovie THEATER. 

Triangle of Sadness (Ruben Östlund - 2022) 

The film follows an influencer couple as they take a trip with some of the wealthiest and truly influential people on a luxury cruise ship. They find themselves in a tight situation with everyone on board when the ship is hit by a storm. The “triangle” explores the concepts of wealth, beauty, and privilege in a satirical way.
