First Impressions of the Theater Premium: From Great Reviews to Impressive Accolades

Since its inception, the Formovie Theater Premium has shaken up the industry. By running off the success of its predecessor, the Theater Premium has become the ultimate updated and elevated 4K Ultra-Short Throw Laser TV. Now - a few weeks after its release - the Formovie Theater Premium has already begun to leave its mark on the industry and reviewers. In this blog, we take a look at how the Theater Premium has been received across the board and why you should get your hands on one as fast as you can.
 

Ultimate Ultra Short Throw Projector Shootout Winner

To start things off, let’s deal with the elephant in the room. This year marked the third consecutive year of the Ultimate Ultra Short Throw Projector Shootout hosted by ProjectorScreen.com. With an expert panel of judges, ProjectorScreen.com joined forces with Projector Reviews to determine the top ultra-short throw projectors of 2024. Formovie was excited to be having both the Theater Premium and the Cinema Edge competing in the showdown.

To demonstrate projector capabilities this year, each manufacturer was invited to the Showdown Arena a month in advance to set up the projectors – all within a 2-hour time limit and without the help of any sophisticated calibration equipment, meters, or signal generators and analyzers. The judges then stress-tested projector color accuracy and dynamic range with both SDR and HDR content, resolution and detail with still and motion video, image scaling and processing, and contrast with both the lights on and the lights off.

The Formovie Theater Premium came in second for both the best projector - chosen in the top 3 by all the judges – while also coming in second during the overall point tabulation. The judges noted that the Theater Premium offered a more celluloid or filmlike image than the digital image of PX3-Pro. They also noted that it may appeal more to some consumers and make it likely to replace its predecessor the Formovie Theater – which had won both the 2022 and 2023 shootout. 

Furthermore, while not a criterion for the competition, the Bowers & Wilkins audio system in the Theater Premium proved to still be the best of any UST projector reviewed by the hosts. The projector is also considerably more affordable than the winning projector - ultimately allowing the competition to conclude that the Theater Premium is an easy choice for those looking for a top-shelf UST at an amazing value. 

Leading Reviews of the Theater Premium 

The Theater Premium has made waves across platforms for its enhanced capabilities and epic new features. In its review, GSM Arena called the Theater Premium the “fanciest” UST projector they’ve reviewed. They concluded that the Theater Premium excels in three key areas: brightness, contrast, and color reproduction. The review noted that the projector’s 2,200 ISO lumens ensured that it could be used in all sorts of lighting with standard mode delivering the highest output from the pre-configured options – even with direct sunlight creeping in.

Further into testing without a dedicated projection screen, GSM Arena was impressed with the clarity and contrast output in a light-controlled environment – citing that the colors appeared vivid, with deep blacks and great out-of-the-box tuning. They were also impressed with the level of detail in the picture, which allowed viewers to make up individual pixels and easily read even smaller bits of text from a distance.

Similarly, watching 4K HDR content on the Theater Premium was a breeze with faultless tone mapping and great contrast. Like its predecessor, the Theater Premium covers 107% of the BT.2020 (aka Rec. 2020) color gamut and features ALPD RGB+4.0 Triple Color Laser Technology  - ensuring natural colors in supported content. The review stated that all of the popular streaming platforms worked flawlessly and played content back up to 4K HDR were supported. Overall, GSMArena found that the Formovie Theater Premium delivered an immersive and enjoyable experience – whether watching movies, gaming, or streaming YouTube content. 

In his review for Slashgear, Jowi Morales gave the Theater Premium a 9 out of 10 – citing its large format viewing without the need for a large TV screen, its excellent sound stage, and the sharp 4K resolution achieved. Morales also loved the quick setup of the projector, stating that he had to take it out of its box, place it on the TV rack, plug it into the outlet, and it was good to go. Morales also enjoyed the use of Dolby Vision to deliver highly accurate colors – stating that it allows viewers to experience movies and TV shows as directors intended. 

Morales further tested out the elevated sound system of the Theater Premium and found that the built-in Bowers & Wilkins speakers offer an excellent soundstage to go along with what you see. Morales notes that the projector's speakers conveyed every detail of Michael W. Smith's "In Christ Alone" with extreme clarity and crispness while its quality also allowed him to feel every emotion in Panic! At The Disco's "Don't Let The Light Go Out" and James Blunt's "Monsters."

Morales praises the Theater Premium's ability to retain all the best features of the previous models while adding necessary upgrades – such as a brighter output and Google TV. Another feature appreciated by Morales was the projector’s Infrared Body Sensor which uses two sensors on either side of the laser projector lens to reduce the projected image to minimal brightness when someone is detected nearby. This helps to avoid accidental eye damage - especially given how bright the Formovie Theater Premium can get.

In his own review, Laurent Willen also states that the Formovie Theater was considered the best UST projector of the last two years, and its successor will undoubtedly take its place. He concluded that the new model took all the strengths of its predecessor and added a few new features.

YouTuber, TT Technology, also offered up a review of the Theater Premium and concluded that with 2,200 ISO Lumens of brightness, stunning 4K resolution, built-in Google TV, low input lag for the gamers, and a second-generation Bowers and Wilkins speaker system, the Formovie Theater Premium is an epic short throw projector for any home theater.

While all of the content viewed in his review looked incredible, the Theater Premium shined with the 4K HDR content - where the accurate and vibrant colors along with the high contrast made for an incredible experience. The review further noted that the response time was less than 18 milliseconds – ensuring that gamers can enjoy all of their favorite console and PC games without the worry of having any input lag.
